Episode 1: Attack of the Space Terrapin
Synopsis
We begin with the attack by the eponymous space terrapin (we'll withhold comment on how much it doesn't look like a terrapin, shall we?) on a vitalumus storage.
We cut to the control room of Centre Neptune where 7-Zark-7 informs us that vitalumus is a precious mineral that helps revitalise exhausted soil, helping to feed millions. Zark wibbles on about Centre Neptune's importance, then, when the vitalumus storage has copped a sufficient beating, he decided to alert G Force to the Spectran invader's presence.
Which turns out to be a good way to introduce the team members. As Zark says:
"Mark's the real leader of G Force. Princess is the only female member of the team. This big fellow is Tiny Harper - he pilots the command ship and assembles the crew. I sort of pay special attention to Princess - I really don't know just why. This is Keyop - he's very special and different. He was manufactured - grown from a single embryonic cell in a laboratory. His speech is a little peculiar, but his powers are amazing. Finally, this is Jason - very capable, but just a trifle eager and hot-headed. So emotional - I do wish he had solid state circuitry like mine.
"These G Force members all have miniaturised cerebonic implants which give them fantastic abilities, beyond those of other humans - orphans who have been trained almost since birth to develop those secret and mysterious powers."
Zark loses track of the invader, and turns the mess over to G Force (who haven't quite settled into their voice roles yet - Tiny in particular doesn't sound his usual self). They go underwater in search of the space terrapin, which is meanwhile off pounding the snot out of an oil refinery.
Oddly, Zark doesn't notice this, and the team surfaces and finally locate the terrapin. Jason wants to shoot at it, and Mark restrains him, believing that it will lead them to its base. He quickly decides that the terrapin is in fact it's own base, and decides that he's going aboard. Jason initially nominates himself as Mark's companion; Princess overrules him and says it's her turn.
They leap from the Phoenix to the space terrapin (have I mentioned that it doesn't really look like a terrapin), and separate; Mark goes one way, warning Princess to look out for herself. She goes the other, telling him to watch his own step. She works on blowing up the terrapin's 'prismatic reflectors', disarming it: just in time, because the ship's commander (who doesn't recognise the Phoenix, and later doesn't recognise the team) orders the ship to fire on the Phoenix.
The team reunites in the landing bay, and uses the whirlwind pyramid (although they call it the 'rotor force' at this point - the Spectran captain calls it the whirlwind pyramid later) to disarm and demoralise the Spectrans. Zark also explains away the sonic boomerang's effect.
Zoltar appears for the first time, chastising the Spectran captain - the Luminous One orders the terrapin destroyed, and the captain - Gorak - to return with what vitalumus he has, setting the terrapin to self destruct.
One of the Phoenix's wing pods is caught, though, and the team must transmute to the Fiery Phoenix in order to escape - which Zark describes as their 'last resort'. They do, and escape successfully, recovering the vitalumus too.
Quotes
"Somewhere off the west coast of the United States, 900 fathoms beneath the surface of the sea, is this secret and extremely important world defence base - Centre Neptune." - 7-Zark-7
"So Earth sends children against us!" - Spectran captain
Notable
No Chief Anderson in this episode.
No 1-Rover-1 this episode either.
Jason notes that this is the third time Spectra have attacked, and G Force have defended - we don't know exactly what happened in those first two except that G Force survived, but didn't win conclusively enough to prevent Spectra returning.
Zark notes that he controls the team's transformations, which changes in later episodes. He also says that it takes 24 hours for the team to return to normal from the Fiery Phoenix, something else that changes in later episodes.
